I am to make a king headboard that is quite ornately shaped - see attached. The overall dimensions are 78.5 wide x 87.5 tall. Can this be made in two pieces as I don't think that I could get it out of my workroom or into the client's home. Also, I have done a few headboards over the years, but this one is quite challenging. Any information or thoughts are appreciated......

That is a huge headboard!! I could see this being made as two twin sizes pushed together, using one king size mattress. I don't see a way to do the one design in two pieces. If someone out there has some ideas, I hope they will share!! Please keep us posted as to how you execute.

For starters, standard doors measure 80" high so even in one piece, this would have to go in with the width of the headboard vertical. Then is there room to turn it once inside the bedroom. As possibly "wrong" as this sound, what about making it in two horizontal sections? A top (the section from just below the mattress to the top ornate edge. And a bottom, the remainder that falls behind the mattress and boxspring. A finishing details (welting, cord?) could be applied on site to hide where the sections come together on the sides. Finally, could this be the style of headboard that hangs on the wall? Removes that extra length to the floor.

Good thinking!!! It didn't occur to me that it may be too tall to go through the door! However, our manual gives a version of the Legs that makes them removable. But, a headboard with wall installation is easier to make and more stable.

A few years ago I made a huge headboard that extended so the night stands also had the headboard behind. The length was supposed to be from the floor to the ceiling. I had to cut the height down to get it thru the door. For the width I actually hinged it in the center back. I left the top and bottom unfinished just enough to fold the headboard inward enough to transport ( in the back of my nephews truck) and get thru the bedroom door. I then finished on site the unfinished area. The only problem was that it was tufted and a few buttons also had to be attached on site also. One of my button placements was over one of the hinges. My brother-in-law was with me and he drilled through the hinge for me and all was fine.
When I was in construction phase I thought I was nuts to agree to the project but I would do it again. I have a picture somewhere I could text or email to you.
