I am making a 54" wide valance and the instructions call for 82" wide fabric. My question - On the pattern, there is an allowance for the return. Is the return in addition to the 82" or included in the 82". If included, I assume I can remove the # of inches until I get to the return I need? I am struggling with 54# wide fabric with a large pattern repeat and no seam. I don't think it is possible with a valance this wide. Is there any way I can use the jabot to make up a few inches of width on that side of valance?

The return amount is part of the 82" width of fabric. Various size returns are given on the pattern, you must use the size return you need. 5 1/2" is the largest given on the pattern. Perhaps you don't need that much. Page 4 of the instruction booklet gives information that can help you decide about a seam. The pattern piece also has a special line drawn on it (to be used for a seam placement when needed). That seam will be hidden in the deep pleat, it is placed 14" from the return end of the pattern. If your fabric is a busy design, often seams are not noticed, especially when using blackout lining. I hope this helps.

Yes, it is a big floral and I believe I will need to piece it and hope for the best. The seam noted on the pattern will not help me as I still need more fabric. I believe I may try to hide it as the pleats start going up to the pole on the other end. Thanks for the help.

If your seam is very close to the pleated swag end, it may possibly hide there. Basically, except for within the long deep jabot, there is no place to hide a seam when fabrics are not wide enough. The yardage page suggest placing a necessary seam in line with one of the rod rings. Someone recently mistook that to mean that it would be hidden there, NO, it won't. That just means that a seam would look better there than just at random. Some suggestions are shown on page 4 to make a seam interesting. Depending on the width of the valance, two balanced seams may look better than one, especially if the fabric is solid. Eliminate seams when possible, but judge placement of a seam depending on that particular fabric, valance size, etc. That sounds like exactly what you did. For very long valances, you can add a pleat or two and add a seam there.
