I have made a number of single or 1 1/2 width drapery panels and I have always encountered the length at the side hems is shorter than the center of the panel. I have used the technique of measuring across the panel from the bottom and marking it, but I am now working with a horizontal pinstripe and there is some distortion of the stripes at the top of the panel. I have squared my fabric, cut off all salvages and even snipped in the fabric every couple of inches in the side hem but am still coming up short on both side ends of the panel. Is there something I can do to avoid this problem in the future?

This is a common problem. Fabric bulk from folding the sides and the process of stitching the sides can cause take up. If you have pressed the side him in place, the heat from the iron can also cause take up (shrinking). Try to do it all very carefully. You can also remeasure and adjust the sides before finishing off the top.
