Hello, I just purchased your Cambridge valance pattern. This will be my first attempt at making window treatments. I have a few beginning questions I hope someone can answer for me. 1. I notice your pattern talks about interlining. How do I determine if I need to use it? 2. Can you make any recommendations on fabric?(I.e., 100% cotton, jacquard, acrylic, etc). 3. Do you have a preferred method for transferring pattern markings to fabric?
Thanks so much, I know my questions are very basic and I am sure I will have more before I finish, but I really want them to look professionally done when finished.

Use interlining only if your fabric needs more body and/or thickness. The pattern offers fabric suggestions, also view the DVD. Since you don't have a lot of experience, try to select a fabric that will be easy for you to work with. Example, something with body that can hold its shape, avoid stripes and plaids, they can be difficult. Try not to mark the front of the fabric. Sometimes fabric markers do not disappear. Mark on the wrong side when possible. Tailor tacks, and chalk can work for you. You can even use a straight pin as a placement.

Hello again, thx for previous reply. I have decided on a cotton twill and sateen lining that will double as contrast and piping fabric. My next question is this:
My pattern states to avoid having jabot stop at halfway point between top of board and floor. As is, that is exactly where it will stop now. I have a cathedral ceiling that is low on the outside wall. (7.5 ft). There is a wide board around the top of the ceiling. The highest I can hang these valances is 84" from floor. ( which is where I want to hang them to help make ceilings look taller). How much should I shorten jabot? Thx, Sue

You will be ok if you shorten or lengthen the jabots to be 3" to 4" past half way point.

Hello again, thx for all your help. My next questions are:
1. I have decided to use all scallops, no side sections. I have 3 different size valances I am making, 45",80" and 84". I am using 3 scallops at 45" windows and 5 at others. Should I only use cording on parts of scallops that show? ( bottom only of scallops 1 & 3 on 45" windows, bottom only of scallops 2 & 4 on 80-84" windows, and bottom and 1 side of scallops 1 & 5 on 80-84" windows) I don't know if it matters on this issue but I am also planning on using interlining and 4/32 weighted cording.
2. I was wondering what your thoughts are on stapling cording on the top front of the board at the board line after treatments are installed followed by stapling 1/2" upholstery tack strips to keep the cording straight. I would then fold fabric on board over and glue to hide tack strips.
I really want want these treatments to look as professional as possible
Thx so much, Sue

Personally, I would probably put cording on all sides of all, except, I would stop cord about 2" from top of board on the pieces underneath others. Cording of top edge of board is very nice, but, it can be tricky and difficult where you have uneven edges (overlaps and cord).

Hello again, sorry to be such a pest.
I am working on cutting out the pattern face fabric now. I am using a large print with big tropical fish. I cut the jabots out just fine, matching the print on all. However, I am having trouble with the pattern for the scallops. ( I am using all scallops, no side pieces). There is no way to get the print to come out right on the scallops. If I use just one of the tropical fish and repeat it on all scallops, it's not bad but that will take a ton more fabric as there are only two of each fish per yard and I need 21 scallops. Also, that's not the way the fish appear in nature. If I use different fish in each I am not crazy about how the edges clash with the wrong colors meeting up. I am not adverse to buying more fabric if repeating the same fish in each is is the right way to go. I also tried using plain fabric in scallops 2 and 4 ( out of 5 total) and thought that kind of looked like a circus tent. I also don't want to do that because the solid part of the jabot will meet a solid scallop on two Windows ( the ones with 3 scallops) and there will be no contrast to set the jabot off; I think the jabot would blend into the scallop as the solid fabrics would be the same. I hope this isn't too confusing.
I wish there were some way to post pics, I would post different pattern layouts I have tried
Also, what is your thinking on adding a small solid treatment on top of where scallop edges meet, similar to a horn separating them? I could also add a small solid section underneath and separate scallops a bit. Sorry for all the questions but I think once I figure out the pattern on the scallops I should be pretty good to go.

We can't judge your fabric, placement is a matter of choice, your choice. Usually we try to display a portion of the print on each piece, not necessarily match each piece. Perhaps a friend of family member can help you choose better than we can.

Hello, thx, I was afraid you were going to say that. Can you give me your thoughts on adding some type of treatment between scallops? Would it add too much bulk? I tried it with rolled up solid fabric and like the look, but don't want to do it if it won't look right. Thx so much

I just can't visualize what you mean. The sections are designed to overlap. That doesn't mean you can't change the design.
