I have a decorator who has requested the victory swag for a wall of windows and wants each swag to fit each window. The smallest width being 24" and the largest being 36". I see that the pattern does not recommend altering the pattern widths. Also, she wants me to make it so that the installer can attach to rod; no rod was sent to me with the work order. Also, the work order says they are using a 2" rod, which the pattern advises against. Do I need to just tell her it won't work? Any recommendations?

We can't give you exact alterations instructions to make the swag wider. You literately would have to increase the top and bottom of the pattern different amounts and probably change the side angle. Perhaps someone out there has done it and will give you their advice here, I hope so. The width sizes on the pattern are 14" and up to 26". Anything smaller or wider will require a different shape. Trying some mock ups will help you to see how it would hang.
The only reason we don't recommend a large dia pole is because of the gap it creates between the swag and the horn. This is fine with some people, others do not like it. You can fit the valance to the pole size in the workroom, it can then be ready to place onto the pole at installation with no further adjustments. You do not have to allow anything extra to fit a 2" pole.

Jan, your challenge reflects something I notice frequently - a designer doesn't know a thing about how treatments are made and how basic math applies to shapes (geometry?!!). And while our wonderful M'Fay staff was polite enough not to just come out and say it, the end result really is "This treatment is not appropriate for your project." Oh well... How about classic swags? I also use the Minutes Matter program to show people the end result of using any particular style, IN SCALE, keeping in mind the actual pattern limitations. Why have clients fall in love with things they simply cannot have?
Good luck!

I would like to know how to figure out what width swag would be best for my pole length and how many swags would fit. The length of the pole is 106". I want to use the jabot on the ends. I have sewn for 30 years and I must not be reading the instruction correctly, it says the # of swags desired. How do you figure out how many will fit and look good?

Hi Amy, I assume you have read the yardage page, which states: Subtract 3" from the pole measurement (this is necessary room got the horns at the end of the pole to fit in), then divide by equal units. Stay within a 14" to 26" width range. (The 14" to 26" widths are the size ranges of the swag patterns given in the package). Do a little math. Your choices are: 4 swags @ 25.75, 5 swags @ 20.6, 6 swags @ 17.1, or 7 swags @ 17.7. When your measurement is a fraction, go in between the lines on the pattern to get your exact size. Keep in mind wide swags give a busy, more ornate effect. Wider swags give a more tailored effect. Your fabric may also play a factor. A large fabric motif may show up better on a wide swag.
Hope this helps.
